One year ago today, on April 15, 2023, Sudan was thrust into the throes of a harrowing conflict. As we mark this somber anniversary, the nation grapples with a profound humanitarian crisis—one that grievously burdens its most vulnerable, especially women and girls. In this analysis, we delve into the profound and far-reaching consequences of a war that continues to ravage Sudan with relentless devastation.

Extensive Human Rights Violations in a Fractured Nation

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has been marked by extensive human rights violations, with thousands of civilians killed and millions displaced. Current statistics show that over 8 million people have been displaced, including more than 6 million within Sudan’s borders and approximately 1.5 million who have sought refuge in neighbouring countries such as Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Central African Republic. The scale of displacement is staggering, with Chad alone providing refuge to over 553,150 displaced individuals.

Amidst this chaos, reports have emerged of sexual violence, including rape, being used as a weapon of war. United Nations officials have raised serious concerns about these atrocities, suggesting that they could constitute war crimes. The systematic use of sexual violence in conflict settings is not only a grave violation of human rights but also serves to perpetuate cycles of trauma and instability.

Increased Vulnerabilities for Women and Girls

Prior to the outbreak of violence, Sudan was already a challenging environment for women and girls, with over 3 million at risk of gender-based violence (GBV). The conflict has exacerbated these risks enormously, with a reported 60% increase in the demand for GBV-related services. More than 1.5 million women and girls of reproductive age are among the internally displaced, facing not only increased health risks but also heightened exposure to sexual violence and exploitation.

Collapse of Health and Social Services

The conflict has severely impacted Sudan's already fragile health and social services, critically limiting access to essential healthcare, including reproductive and maternal health services. This breakdown has led to an increase in maternal mortality rates and pregnancy complications, deepening the public health crisis amid the ongoing conflict.

Severe Economic and Educational Setbacks

The economic impact of the conflict has been profound, with numerous families losing their primary sources of income and livelihoods due to displacement or the destruction of local economies. Women, who are often responsible for the care and support of their families, face extraordinary challenges in accessing economic opportunities and resources amidst the ongoing chaos.

Moreover, the conflict has drastically disrupted education, with millions of children, especially girls, out of school. The lack of educational opportunities threatens to have long-term detrimental effects on their personal development and future economic prospects.

Resilience and Advocacy by Sudanese Women and Girls

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Sudanese women and girls have demonstrated remarkable resilience. Women-led organizations have been pivotal in addressing the immediate needs of those affected by the conflict. These organizations not only provide critical support services but also play a key role in advocating for the rights and protection of women and girls, ensuring that gender-specific needs are addressed within humanitarian responses.

The Role of the International Community

The international community has a crucial role in supporting efforts to mitigate the impact of the conflict on women and girls. It is imperative that aid organizations and governments prioritize the delivery of gender-sensitive aid and support initiatives that empower women and girls. Ensuring the involvement of women in peace-building and decision-making processes is critical for achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict.

A Call to Action for Continued Support

Looking forward, it is imperative that peace talks and humanitarian efforts continue to address the specific needs of women and girls. Comprehensive and targeted interventions are necessary to break the cycle of violence and displacement and pave the way for a future where the rights and dignity of all Sudanese, especially the most vulnerable, are upheld.

In conclusion, the ongoing conflict in Sudan transcends mere political or military issues; it is a profound human rights crisis that requires a concerted and informed response, particularly concerning the impact on women and girls. Their safety, rights, and access to essential services must be at the forefront of the global agenda to ensure that they can live in a world free from the threat of violence and discrimination. As the international community reflects on the situation in Sudan, the plight of its women and girls cannot be overlooked.
